When an individual is arrested and hit with criminal charges, the experience is often devastating and traumatic. Any criminal offense is a big deal, but drug charges are some of the most serious. Drug charges may stay on a person’s permanent records and prevent an individual from gaining employment or moving on with life. Those in Colorado who are convicted of drug charges can face stringent penalties, such as heavy fines and years of incarceration. However, even if a conviction never happens, drug charges can ruin a person’s life.

Incident report

Recently, a minor league baseball player was arrested in Vail and hit with drug charges. According to reports, the man was driving along Interstate 70 when he was pulled over for speeding and drifting lanes. Police said the man told them he was traveling to Denver to teach a baseball clinic and that there were no drugs in the vehicle. However, a K-9 officer apparently alerted authorities to the rear wheel area and back seat of the car. Reports said the man gave permission to officers to search the car.

Arrested and charged

After searching the back seat area, officers said they found a white bag with cologne and $1,000 in cash that was held by a rubber band. Reportedly, officers also found a duffle bag in the truck that the man said held cleats and baseballs, but allegedly contained several wrapped packages of drugs. Police reports said the man was arrested and charged with unlawful possession and distribution of methamphetamine and oxycodone.

Without question, these are very serious charges. However, for the man to be convicted, the drug charges must be proved in court and beyond a reasonable doubt by the prosecution. In Colorado, any person who faces drug charges has options available that may help the situation, such as the right to consult a legal representative. By obtaining the services of an experienced and skilled litigator, those accused can ensure that their individual rights will be protected throughout this process.
