Prenuptial agreements and your divorce in Colorado

Going through a divorce can be troubling, and it may lead to stress, frustration and even depression over how you’re being treated. You may feel your ex-partner is unreasonable or being stubborn just to make you angry. In some instances, this could even be true. One thing that could help is if you have a prenuptial agreement.

A prenuptial agreement isn’t only for the wealthy. In fact, prenuptial agreements can be used by those without many assets to make sure it’s understood what will happen if they come into money or what would happen to whatever assets they have in the event of a divorce.

Because a prenuptial agreement is agreed to before marriage, couples generally sign the contract when they’re in agreement with each other and want to be fair to one another. This can help reduce the risk of stubborn or angry partners trying to claim more marital assets than they’re entitled to later on.

Other things, like tax liabilities, child support, credit card debt and shopping habits can also be addressed in a prenuptial agreement. Prenups can help protect partners from having to pay back their significant other’s debts or student loans in the case of a divorce.

Most Colorado residents would agree that having a prenuptial agreement when one spouse has more money and assets than the other is a no-brainer. This helps them avoid having too many of their assets taken in the case of a divorce.

Of course, if a prenuptial agreement isn’t signed before a marriage, there are other ways to keep what is your own. Our comprehensive website has more information on prenuptial agreements and what to do when you want to file for divorce.
