It was only a few days ago that it was first reported that Katie Holmes was filing a surprise divorce petition against Tom Cruise. While there was speculation that the filing could lead to a prolonged dispute involving child custody and Cruise’s scientology beliefs, the ex-couple has come to a quick divorce settlement.
According to several media reports, Cruise and Holmes’ attorneys were able to agree to a divorce settlement over the weekend. No terms of the settlement have been made public, although the ex-couple did issue a joint statement noting that they have been “committed to working together as parents” for the best interests of Suri, their young daughter.
Holmes’ attorney did note that the agreement was signed that they were “thrilled” to see her embark on the next chapter of her life. The attorney also thanked Cruise’s lawyers for their “professionalism and diligence” to help bring about a quick end to divorce proceedings.
Those familiar with the situation say that it was likely Holmes would get primary physical custody of Suri, although Cruise would get “generous” visitation rights. The 33-year-old Holmes currently lives in New York with their daughter.
The parties’ quest to reach a quick settlement was described as a weekend of “marathon negotiations.” Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise less than two weeks ago. It had been reported that she was seeking sole physical custody of their daughter and that she would not change her mind.
