Courteney Cox divorces, drops ‘Arquette’ from name

Sometimes celebrity divorces develop into bitter feuds between the stars. That doesn’t appear to be the case with Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who officially called it quits late last week after a long separation.

Their divorce didn’t seem inevitable. Cox and Arquette split up in October 2010, and they said at the time that it was to better understand themselves. In any case, they are said to remain friendly. The even work together, co-executive producing Cox’s series “Cougar Town.”

The couple met on the set of the film “Scream” in 1996 and married three years later. This month they would have celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary. Arquette apparently filed divorce papers first, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Cox followed suit and is also seeking to drop “Arquette” from her name, not surprisingly.

As recently as 2009, Cox had said outright that divorce didn’t seem like an option for them. But relationships change over time, and it seems that the couple decided that they do better living apart than together.

The couple has a daughter, who just turned 8 this week. They both petitioned the court for joint legal and physical custody. Back when they split up in 2010, they referred to themselves as “best friends.” Not all couples remain that way after a breakup, but many people do keep a close bond when they co-parent.

It’s also Cox’s birthday this week — she’s turning 48. Arquette is a few years younger.
