Race, fundraiser help benefit domestic violence victims

It’s an unusual fundraiser, but it’s becoming a popular one. The “Men in Heels” race, the second annual event, was held recently to benefit victims of domestic violence. The event took place to raise funds and awareness for Hilltop Community Resources’ Latimer House, which provides shelter, therapy and advocacy to those affected by sexual assault and domestic violence in Mesa County, Colorado.

The race literally features men running down the street in high heels. The theme this year is reportedly, “A real man would run a mile in her shoes.”

Hilltop apparently provided the shoes for the dozens of men who participated in the race to choose from. The winning team was made up of five people from the Western Colorado Conservation Corps. A separate team raised the most money, according to the Grand Junction Sentinel.

In the race, the men used a purse as a baton as they ran a half-block down the street and back. One broke a heel. Many runners taped the shoes to their white athletic socks to keep them on their feet. Some enthusiastic participants even sported women’s clothes.

A crowd of several hundred spectators gathered, and everyone, including the men participating, were all smiles.

As we reported earlier, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It’s likely many events like this – well, not quite like this – will pop up in local communities.

Nationally, one in four women has experienced some sort of domestic violence in her lifetime. Sadly, many cases are not even reported.
