Driving while under the influence of alcohol is a serious problem that continues to plague Colorado and other states. Statistically, one person in the United States is killed every 48 minutes in accidents caused by drunk driving. As the holiday season approaches, police forces in Colorado are ramping up patrols and going to great lengths to combat drunk driving and keep roadways safe.

Officers increasing patrols

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season and, according to the Colorado State Patrol, is also one of the top holidays for DUI citations. An officer with the Colorado State Patrol noted that Thanksgiving Eve begins the holiday DUI season for law enforcement in Colorado. The officer said there is typically an increase of people celebrating but many do not do it responsibly and get behind the wheel while impaired.

Law enforcement agencies across the state are scheduled to step up their efforts aimed at stopping impaired drivers before they cause a senseless tragedy. Reportedly, the top three counties for DUI citations last year in Colorado were El Paso, Adams and Weld. The Chief of the Colorado State Patrol said there’s nothing wrong with celebrating but urged everyone to make a plan for a sober ride home this holiday season.

Help for those charged

Receiving a DUI charge can do significant damage to a person’s reputation. However, a charge does not constitute a conviction; it’s only a formal accusation. Those in Colorado who have been charged with DUI have the right to seek legal representation to help defend against these types of charges. A skilled litigator can safeguard personal rights and help determine a strategy to achieve the best possible outcome.
