3 tips for going through a divorce trial

While many divorces are handled through mediation, there are some that end up going through court. During the time that you are in the courtroom, you must ensure that you are handling things in the appropriate manner. The judge is going to watch what you do and listen to what you say. Some of these might be considered when the decisions are being made about the case. With that in mind, there are some specific things for you to remember.

First, when you are dealing with the child custody matters, remember that the children belong to both parents. Referring to them as “my” children may be problematic. Instead, acknowledge the other parent by referring to them as “our” children to show that you agree both parents are important. Additionally, be prepared with a few points you can discuss if you are asked what positive things you have to say about your ex’s parenting skills.

Second, when your ex is speaking or their side is presenting information to the court, keep a neutral expression. Trying to show your displeasure or disagreement by saying something under your breath or rolling your eyes can be construed as a disrespectful act. Showing that you are a stable adult is usually beneficial in these cases.

Third, be fully honest about everything related to the marriage and end of the marriage. Trying to hide any important facts can lead to significant legal trouble for you. Be sure that you alert your attorney to anything that might cause a problem. Doing this before the trial can help them have a plan for addressing the matters during the trial.

While you might need support at the trial, remember that you might have to disclose some personal details. Try to choose one or two people who you fully trust and who will remain quiet during the hearing.
