Domestic violence can impact your health

On Behalf of | Jun 8, 2018 | Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a serious matter that has a lot of impacts. For the victims of the abuse, there are health effects that can begin to creep up over time. While you might think that you are only going to have to deal with these if you are physically abused, this isn’t the case. You can face health effects if you are the victim of domestic violence that didn’t involve physical contact, such as with emotional abuse.

The health impacts of a person who is physically abused are usually pretty easy to spot. They might suffer from bruises and cuts. Broken bones and head injuries are also possible. But, things can go far beyond those. In some cases, the effects aren’t noticeable from the outside.

Anyone who has to deal with domestic violence can have some serious mental health issues. Severe cases can come with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Depression, anxiety and problems with substance abuse can also occur. It is imperative that anyone who is a victim of domestic violence takes the time to get the medical and mental health care that they need.

Oftentimes, the daily life of the victim is impacted because of the abuse. This might mean that even if they want to leave the abusive marriage, they can’t. Sadly, some of these victims feel stuck. This keeps them in the atrocious situation and can mean that things get even worse with their health.

People who are walking away from an abusive relationship might need to seek out a restraining order. While this isn’t a foolproof way to stay safe, is does provide some protection since you can contact the police if the abuser does come near you.
