Waves of emotions are common in the first year of divorce

Some people are shocked when they start to feel sad because they got divorced. This is a difficult thing to experience because most people expect that they will remain happy. Once you realize that you aren't totally happy, you have to figure out what to do.

For many people, the sadness that occurs in this situation is because of the loss of familiarity. You aren't going to have someone to share life's ups and downs with like you did when you were married. This can lead to you feeling a bit upset. It can also be because you feel bad that you wasted as much time as you did on a marriage that didn't last.

You have options for working through these emotions and moving past them. Remember that you are likely going to feel these emotions stronger during the first year of the divorce. This is because the experiences and holidays that you have during that time are all the "firsts" and once you make it through those, you might be able to cope better.

Try to have a plan for your future so that you can focus on that when things get intense with your feelings about the end of the marriage. This can help you refocus and not stress too much on what's going on with things that don't have any impact on where your life is going.

You might also feel better if you have a solid foundation to start off your new life. You can work toward this during the property division process.

If you find that nothing you do provides you with relief from the sadness, you might need to speak to someone to work through things. A counselor can help you learn how to cope with the overwhelming emotions you are feeling.
