Prenuptial agreements are important even for young people

Many young people might believe that they don't need a prenuptial agreement. This is an incorrect belief and that can lead to trouble later in life. There are several reasons why you should have a prenup even if you don't have many assets now.

Having student loans is a big reason to have a prenup. If you obtained those loans before the marriage, they are considered separate debt. You don't need to be liable for your future spouse's student loans, and they shouldn't have to pay for yours if the marriage ends. You can also cover other debts that one person had coming into the marriage.

If you think that you will receive an inheritance, you should have a prenup. While these are usually considered the property of the party who received them, having them covered in the prenup provides an extra layer of protection.

A prenuptial agreement is also useful if either spouse has a business. It can set terms for handling that if the marriage does end. Essentially, it would mean that the owner of the business could keep the company.

Sometimes, a prenup will outline alimony payments. This is important if either party decides to be a stay-at-home parent or spouse. It is also essential if there is a family business because it provides support terms for the person who isn't keeping the company.

You shouldn't think that having a prenup means you assume the marriage will fail. Instead, this is a way to get on the same page with your betrothed about finances before you tie the knot.
