Chances are that several of your Colorado neighbors are married. If you were to talk to them about their relationships in comparison to your own, you’d likely determine that no two marriages are exactly the same. However, you’d also probably find that one or more of the people you speak with can relate to one another because of shared experiences or similar issues in their relationships.

Marriage can be really tough and, sometimes, spouses ultimately decide that they no longer wish to stay together. If that has recently happened in your relationship, there may have been multiple issues that prompted your decision. Emotions can be all over the place during divorce. It’s definitely a time when it helps to have a strong support system in place.

Issues that lead to divorce

Even though you’re likely wanting to move on in life and leave the past behind, it can be helpful to analyze the things that led to the breakdown in your marriage, if only to keep you from making similar mistakes in the future. The following list shows common issues people mention as reasons for divorce:

  • A lot of people fight about money. In fact, financial problems between spouses are often cited as primary causes of divorce.
  • Fidelity is a critical factor in marital relationships. Some marriages never recover from affairs.
  • Perhaps you were feeling like your spouse was no longer affectionate toward you and you decided you’d rather be single than endure a lonely marriage.
  • Job-related stress can spill over into marital stress. Disagreements and stressful situations regarding one or both spouses’ jobs are common causes of divorce.
  • If you and your spouse are never on the same page when it comes to parenting, this may have been a leading factor in your decision to divorce.

Regardless of what the details of your personal relationship were, you have every right to look forward to a bright and happy future. Building a new lifestyle can be quite challenging after divorce, especially if children are involved and your marriage lasted 10 or more years. With appropriate guidance and support, however, you’ll likely be able to overcome any obstacles that arise.

Navigating proceedings

If you think your ex is going to give you a hard time regarding a settlement or parenting plan, you may have to aggressively protect your rights and best interests to get a fair and agreeable settlement.
