Is it possible to change my divorce order after it is final?

On Behalf of | May 1, 2018 | Divorce

From your financial support obligations to your child custody order, the terms of your divorce will have a significant impact on your life for years to come. While the terms of your divorce order could work reasonably well for years, there are times in which you may need to seek a modification of your existing order.

If your child custody and visitation arrangements are no longer working well for your Colorado family, it might be beneficial to explore the possibility of obtaining a modification. While it is not always possible to modify the terms of your order, it might be a way for you to obtain terms that suit your current needs and abilities.

Sometimes, change is necessary

Divorce is a major change, but life sometimes continues to change long after a divorce is final. In some cases, the circumstances of your life may mean that you are no longer able to meet your divorce-related obligations. While there are certain parts of your divorce order that you cannot change, you might be able to secure a modification for the following:

  • Child custody
  • Child support
  • Visitation schedule

It is not enough to simply want to change your divorce order. There must be valid evidence of the need to do so. This might be an option for you if your financial circumstances change, and you are no longer able to meet your child support obligations. You might qualify for a modification if you are the custodial parent and you need additional support for the care of your child.

Modifications are subject to the approval of the court. If you believe you may qualify for a change in your custody order, visitation schedule or financial support payments, you may find it beneficial to seek help as you pursue this goal.

Solutions for your family law concerns

If you believe you may have a valid reason to pursue a modification to an existing divorce order, it is prudent to seek help. A complete evaluation of your case can reveal if this is an option for you and how you can move forward with the necessary legal steps.

Life is uncertain, and if the terms of your divorce order no longer match your needs or your abilities, there are choices available to you. Modifications are not always possible, but this might allow you the chance to secure terms that are better for you and work for your children as well.
