These factors might mean that your divorce takes longer

A divorce isn't a quick process, so people who are planning on filing for one need to be ready to stick out the process for the long haul. There are several things that you can count on to draw the divorce process out at least a little bit.

One factor that will impact the speed of your divorce is the mandatory 90-day waiting period before the court can enter the divorce decree. This means that you will have to wait at least that long from the date the petition is filed, even if you don't have another issue present.

Another factor that can impact the case is the children. In order to file for custody of children in Colorado, the child has to be under 6 months of age or have lived in the state for the six months prior to the filing of the case. This is a big jump from the 90-day residency requirement that is in place to file for divorce in this state.

Child custody and property division matters might prevent your divorce from moving forward in the minimum amount of time. If you and your ex can work together to come to agreements on how everything should be divided and what will happen with child custody, you might be able to get the process over with sooner rather than later.

Even if the paperwork is all done for the divorce, you should still plan for it to impact you emotionally for a while. A divorce is a big event in your life that you have to give yourself time to cope with.
