Think carefully about the prospect of alimony

On Behalf of | Oct 12, 2017 | Child Support, Spousal Maintenance

Men and women who have given up on a career to become a stay-at-home parent or homemaker might not know what to do if they find out that a divorce is imminent. Unfortunately, this is something that happens all too often.

Even though you have depended on your spouse for financial support, you might realize that this isn’t necessarily going to be the case during and after the divorce. Depending on the factors present in your case, you might be able to file for spousal support.

Spousal support payments are a way that you can ask your ex to care for you while you take steps to be able to care for yourself. There are many different types of alimony that you need to consider, so make sure that you find out which ones might apply to your case.

One thing that you need to realize is that alimony payments aren’t automatic. You will have to ask for these. If you and your ex can come to an agreement about the payments, you might be able to get what you need. The alternate method of getting spousal support is to turn to the court to find out if a judge thinks you need alimony.

There are some cases, such as when there is a disability that might lead to permanent alimony. Even then, there are limitations that apply. For example, you wouldn’t get the payments any longer if you get remarried. Other conditions might apply to these cases.

Make sure that you understand the terms of alimony if it is awarded in your case. This might help you to plan for the future. Your divorce attorney can provide more information on the types of alimony and which types you should ask for.
