Alimony isn’t guaranteed and must be handled properly

On Behalf of | Oct 17, 2017 | Child Support, Spousal Maintenance

We recently discussed the fact that everyone needs to think carefully about alimony payments. Not everyone who files for a divorce will have to worry about alimony; however, when a case does make this necessary, you have to be ready to handle the situation properly.

One situation that is usually associated with alimony is when one person voluntarily leaves a career to stay home to care for children. In this case, the person might need alimony payments to help cover his or her life expenses while he or she makes his or her way back into the workforce.

Alimony is something that is dependent upon many different factors. One of these is the standard of living that was established during the marriage. There isn’t any guarantee that alimony payments will be enough to keep up with that standard, but it is a consideration in the determination.

We understand that you might not want to think about all of this, but it is important when you are trying to decide if you are going to fight for or against alimony. No matter which side of the case you are on, you should make sure that you fully think about each aspect that might matter.

When you are trying to work on the divorce through mediation, the alimony payments might be a primary point of contention. It is a good point for negotiations when you are working out the financial matters. Just remember that alimony doesn’t always mean that you are stuck with monthly payments. Instead, other options like lump sum payments might be possible. We can help you consider all of these vital points.
