Protect your legal health after getting married

The day that you say your vows, you might be happy that the journey toward getting married is finally over. You have your new spouse and a new life awaits. What you might not realize is that you have a lot of work to do, and this work doesn't have to do with making your marriage work. Instead, this has to do with ensuring that your legal health is taken care of.

One of the most important things you need to do as soon as possible is to file your marriage certificate. This legally establishes the marriage with the state. If you plan to change your name, now is the time to do this too.

Next, think about getting a postnuptial agreement worked out if you didn't sign a prenuptial agreement. Now that you and your spouse are officially starting your life, the postnup can help you to stay protected if something happens and the marriage doesn't work out. Laying out clear plans now for what will happen can actually make your marriage more secure.

Finally, be sure that you update your estate plan, life insurance policies and financial accounts. You likely want to have your spouse listed as the beneficiaries on these accounts. You should also think about setting up powers of attorney.

As you go through these points, you will need to determine how to handle each. Getting applicable questions answered and thinking about how your choices now will impact the future can help you to take care of everything so that you can spend the rest of your life enjoying the love of your life.
