Social media: Negative influence on the rise in divorce cases

Using social media is part of everyday life for many people, especially those who are younger. Now, unlike in the past few decades, people are on social media multiple times a day, uploading and sharing a constant flow of information. Unfortunately, by using social media so often, people may be putting their marriages and relationships at risk. On top of that, social media updates and information can be used in divorce proceedings, so it’s something to keep in mind if you’re a savvy social media user.

According to a news report, a British law firm had conducted a survey of 2,000 Britons to see how social media affected married couples. One in seven stated that they would consider a divorce due to how their significant other was behaving online. That’s not all; at least one in four had been in an argument over the use of social media in the last week, and around 17 percent stated they had been fighting over social media use daily.

What’s also interesting is that some people had knowledge of their significant others’ passwords, while the significant other may not know that was the case. That could be an indication that some people feel the need to review their spouse’s social media accounts.

The United States has also done research on divorce and its relation to social media. Eighty-one percent of divorce lawyers interviewed by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers stated that social media did play some part in divorce cases in an escalating fashion since 2005. It goes to show that as social media has expanded, it has had influences, some of which are negative, on people’s relationships.
