What is a ‘costly’ divorce? Look at these

When rich businesspeople get divorced, they have a lot on the line. In the absence of a prenuptial agreement, they sometimes lose up to half their fortune in a divorce settlement. Let’s take a look at some of the most high-profile divorces among business moguls. The payouts are certainly eye-catching.

• Donald and Ivanka Trump. Donald apparently thought about the divorce scenario before they got married: They signed an agreement that set a maximum divorce payout of $25 million. When the couple split in 1992, that’s how much Ivanka got. When Trump later divorced Marla Maples, she got a “mere” $1 million.

• Craig and Wendy McGraw. Together they started a cable TV company, which they ended up selling for more than $750 million. After that, they started a cellphone empire, which they sold in the early 1980s for about $12 billion. When they divorced, Wendy got about $460 million – apparently enough to satisfy her monthly budget of $200,000.

• Rupert and Anna Murdoch. They finalized their divorce in 1999 after 32 years of marriage. Anna got $1.7 billion as the settlement. Just days later, Rupert married a woman who is 38 years younger.

• Adnan and Soraya Khashoggi. The Saudi businessman, estimated to be the richest man in the world in the early 1980s with a fortune of about $40 billion, earned his money from a business that owns and manages banks, hotels and other real estate. When the couple divorced, she got a settlement reportedly worth $874 million.

These are just a few examples of expensive divorces, and we haven’t even mentioned Frank and Jamie McCourt.
