School’s most basic lessons not just for kids

On Behalf of | Aug 6, 2013 | Child Custody & Parenting Time

With summer starting to wind down, schools across the country will be gearing up for the return of children through their doors. Educating your children is so important, but at the same time, it’s important for divorced parents – or divorcing parents – to remember to educate themselves on how to get along, too. Divorce is one of the most difficult times in a child’s life, but you – as parents – can make it easier. There are special school-related matters for divorced parents that you and your ex may not have thought too much about, but are also important.

Keep in mind assignments from school are often hard to keep track of if a child is traveling back and forth between two homes. Finding ways to keep co-parenting tasks easier is a must when both parents are actively involved in a child’s school-related activities. Most schools today have made good use of technology to help keep parents involved. Some simply allow a parent to sign into the school website to view a child’s grades, attendance and even specific assignments, including instructions and due dates.

If possible, you may want to schedule a conference at the beginning of the year with your child’s teacher to discuss your specific family circumstances. You can determine what the best form of communication will be, whether that is by phone, email or daily notes sent home with your child. For parents who do not live in the same local area as their children, you may need to specifically request that report cards and progress reports are mailed to you. This can help ensure you are included in your child’s progress throughout the school year.

It’s important to realize that sharing your child’s accomplishments in school with your ex will not only bring your ex and your children closer, but it keeps them in the loop, too. While it can be difficult to do, it is usually best for the children.

Many divorce decrees and child custody arrangements include specifics about the above and with good reason. Parents can easily be left out in the dark simply because they simply did not consider what might happen during the school years.

If you are contemplating a divorce, contact an experienced Colorado divorce attorney. These professionals can help protect your rights during a divorce, as well as the rights of your children. There are many issues at stake during a divorce, including those involving child custody, visitation, spousal support and property division. Make sure your interests are protected.
