Charges filed against man for kidnapping son, fleeing to Canada

Multiple charges have been filed against a Colorado man who allegedly kidnapped his three-year-old son and fled to Canada. The father was found in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, in a motel with his son and was arrested. The boy was returned to his mother on May 28. The man was extradited back to Colorado. According to earlier reports by The Denver News Channel, the man had entered Canada illegally.

According to prosecutors, the man attacked the mother, who is also the man's ex-wife, with a stun gun and pepper spray in her Longmont, Colorado, home. After the alleged domestic violence attack, he took the child and drove to Canada. The man's father was arrested in Missouri, later as an accomplice.

Prosecutors have charged the man with second-degree kidnapping and first- and second-degree burglary. In addition, three other charges - using a stun gun, violation of custody, and violation of a protection order - are all domestic violence-related.

The defendant is currently being held at the Boulder County Jail on $500,000 bond. His next hearing is scheduled for July 3.

This isn't the first time the defendant has taken his son and disappeared. He did the same last July when his ex-wife filed for divorce. His and his son's whereabouts were not known for eight months. Police located the two in a box truck in Washington County. They were hiding under carpet inside the truck. Both parents legally had custody of the boy at the time, so no charges were filed.

Domestic violence charges are often coupled with other criminal charges. Those defendants require the representation of an experienced, skilled attorney to ensure their rights are protected throughout the case. Such an attorney will explain the options available to their clients and work diligently towards getting them the best outcome possible for their cases.
